12V Solar Regulators
The solar power is passed through the regulator to a battery bank to be stored for later use. The main reason for this is to control the charge going to the battery so that it is not overcharged.
Although the solar power can be connected directly to the battery for smaller solar panels under 40 watts, for larger solar anels it is required. Therefore a solar regulator, also called a solar controller, is used as an electronic switch to regulate the voltage going to the storage batteries to prevent overcharging. Some solar regulators incorporate a new technology called MPPT to get the maximum power out of the solar panels so as to actually deliver more power to the load or battery because the solar output voltage is determined by the system load, the temperature of the solar cells and to a lesser extent the amount of sunlight falling on the solar panels.
Why use a solar regulator?
Solar regulators are used to regulate solar panel voltage before it is fed to a battery in a stand-alone system, as opposed to a grid-tied system.The solar power is passed through the regulator to a battery bank to be stored for later use.
